On September 9, 1914 they had their first child, Clyde Ernest. He lived for six months and on March 9, 1915 he died.
Here is a letter that was written by Ernest to his mother Minerva the day their baby died.

March 9, 1915
Dear Mother,
I will try and write you a short letter tonight. Mama this is the sadest and lonesomest time that I have ever witenest my hart is all most broken at 2 o’clock this evening, the deth aingle visited us and takened our dear little boy. Oh mamma it was so hard to give him up but of course god nos best he takin sick just a week a go to day and pore little fellow god only noes how he had suferd. He had the diptharia. Oh my lord I don’t know how we can go on with out it. It was a bout all the pleasure we had. At all and now he is gone. Oh my god it is offul to even think about.
I can just see him whin he would reach his sweet little hands for me to take him with his sweet little smile and just to think he is gone from us for ever in this world but if we live as we ought to we will meet the dear little sweet thing a gain some day by and by. Mama a pearson don’t know how hard it is to give up one of their own dear children pore little Lula. I feel so sorry for her. She is just completely broke down. I am so a fraid she will be sick for she never has bin stout since the baby was bornd. She is so nervous she cant walk without some one helping her.
Well mamma I cant keep my mind on anything long enough to write so I will close asking you to write often and pray for us pore sad and lonely children.
